A group monitoring human rights in Syria says government forces shelled a camp for internally displaced people in the country's northwest, killing at least 10 people. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights on Sunday said the camp in a suburb of Idlib province and surrounding areas were targeted. Idlib is a stronghold for forces fighting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad. The group said 10 civilians were killed and more than 20 others were injured. Footage from the site shows a number of blasts taking place across a slope, with the sound of explosions in the background. A pro-government media outlet reported that Russian and Syrian warplanes attacked the stronghold for armed groups and killed at least five fighters. A UN statement released after the attack calls on parties involved to exercise self-restraint. It said, "it is civilians who suffer the tragic consequences of continuing hostilities." The statement noted that the UN has documented the deaths of at least 121 civilians in the area since the beginning of this year alone. While large-scale fighting has subsided in the area since a truce was reached between Russia and Turkey in 2020, sporadic clashes continue between government and anti-government forces. Russia backs the government of Bashar al-Assad, while Turkey supports anti-government forces.
