The Israeli military continued its offensive in the Gaza Strip on Thursday. It is also searching for Hamas's top leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar. The Israeli military said it attacked suspected Hamas bases, mainly in Khan Younis in southern Gaza where Sinwar is thought to be hiding. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that the military had encircled Sinwar's house in the city. He said it is only a matter of time before they get him. A senior official of Hamas's political wing spoke to reporters in Beirut, Lebanon, on Thursday, and denied that Sinwar is in Khan Younis. Meanwhile, Gaza health authorities said Thursday that 350 people had been killed over a 24-hour period, putting the death toll of the past two months at more than 17,170. They said many of the victims were women and children. On Thursday, UN relief chief Martin Griffiths expressed a strong sense of crisis, saying that there are no longer any safe places for civilians in southern Gaza. He added they do not have a humanitarian operation there that can be called by that name anymore. Griffiths referred to the Rafah crossing on the Egyptian border, through which aid to Gaza is now flowing. He said it is not sustainable, and called for the opening at an early date of the Kerem Shalom crossing on Gaza's southern border with Israel.
