Halloween pumpkins harvested in central Japan NHK

The harvesting of pumpkins for Halloween decorations is at its peak in Nagano Prefecture, central Japan.

Students at Yatsugatake Center Farm Specialized Training College in Hara Village are growing various types of pumpkins in a field measuring roughly 1.5 hectares.

On Tuesday, pumpkins that had been dried on the field were loaded onto a truck.

Pumpkins of the Atlantic Giant variety weigh as much as 80 kilograms.

The students said they grew faster and have a better color than usual because of the hot summer and the lack of rain.

A second-year student said they have been able to grow pumpkins with unusual shapes, including triangular ones. He said the big pumpkins will be displayed at the market on campus, so visitors can see them up close.

The college plans to harvest some 13,000 pumpkins through next week.

They will mainly be delivered to hotels and theme parks.
