The new laws would define the Philippines&#039; entitlements and set designated sea lanes to reinforce sovereignty and maritime rights under international law.
                
Marcos said on Friday that the new laws signify the government&#039;s commitment to uphold an international rules-based order and ensure the safety and prosperity of the Philippine maritime domain.
                
Marcos said, &quot;We will continue to pursue and defend our maritime interests and navigate towards a brighter and stronger new Philippines.&quot;
China reacted swiftly, with the foreign ministry saying it has summoned the Philippine Ambassador to lodge representations over the new laws.
                
Manila and Beijing have been increasingly at odds in the South China Sea as China&#039;s activities become more assertive in the region.
