A bushfire has broken out on a mountain in Japan's Yamanashi Prefecture, which is located west of Tokyo. Residents in a community at the foot of the mountain have been ordered to evacuate.
The blaze started on Thursday. Despite aerial firefighting efforts, it is now spreading on Mt. Ougiyama, which straddles the cities of Uenohara and Otsuki.
Japanese Self-Defense Force troops, called up by the prefecture, joined the firefight on Friday morning. Helicopters are also being used.
Firefighters say the flames spread toward the summit first, and then started moving toward a community at the foot of the mountain. The community is situated about 350 meters away from the blaze.
One hundred and 43 people in a district in Uenohara were ordered to evacuate. Officials say 15 evacuees were at two designated shelters in the district as of 4 a.m. on Friday.
Firefighters believe that the blaze started along a trekking route in an area where there are benches. They say logs piled up there were burning violently initially. They add that trees and dry grass on the slope appear to have caught fire after that.
