The US government says it has decided to sell weapons worth an estimated 385 million dollars to Taiwan, and has notified Congress of the plan. The decision on Friday comes one day before Taiwan President Lai Ching-te leaves for a Pacific tour that includes a stopover in Hawaii. Washington says the package includes spare parts for F-16 fighters and radar systems. It says the proposed sale will help improve the security of the recipient and assist in maintaining political stability, military balance, and economic progress in the region. Taiwan's foreign ministry says this will be the 18th arms provision under the US administration of President Joe Biden. China has been ramping up military pressure by repeatedly staging massive drills around Taiwan. In light of this, the ministry says Taiwan will continue to demonstrate its resolve for self-defense and to deepen its close security partnership with the US.
