Russia, Ukraine exchange over 300 POWs NHK

Russia and Ukraine have exchanged more than 300 prisoners of war in the latest such swap.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media on Monday that his team managed to bring 189 Ukrainians back home.

He said those freed include military personnel who defended the steelworks in the eastern Ukrainian city of Mariupol, a fierce battleground in the first phase of Russia's invasion, and soldiers who defended the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Two civilians were also included.

Zelenskyy said, "We are working to free everyone from Russian captivity."

He thanked the United Arab Emirates and other partners for mediating the swap.

Russia's defense ministry announced on social media on Monday that 150 Russian servicemen were returned from Ukraine.

The ministry also said that for the second straight day Russian troops had seized control of a settlement in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk.
