Japan's health ministry has drafted a set of guidelines on the amount of physical activity recommended by age group. A survey by the Sports Agency shows that the physical test scores of elementary and junior high school students across Japan have declined in recent years. The coronavirus pandemic is cited as one factor. The draft guidelines are in line with the World Health Organization's recommendations for children aged under 18. They include at least 60 minutes of walking and other moderate to vigorous physical activities per day, and at least three days per week of vigorous activities such as jogging. Children are advised to reduce the amount of time spent sitting or looking at smartphones. But those who do intense sport activities are encouraged to take at least two days off per week. The draft guidelines recommend at least 60 minutes of daily walking and other aerobic activities for adults, and at least 40 minutes for the elderly. Two or three days of muscle training per week is advised for both age groups. The ministry plans to finalize the guidelines by the end of March, and distribute them to municipalities for use in community health programs.
