Scorching heat continuing in central, western Japan on Sunday NHK

Temperatures in parts of central and western Japan soared above 35 degrees Celsius on Sunday morning, and are expected to reach dangerous levels later in the day.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says, as of 11 a.m., the temperatures have reached 36.7 degrees in Nagoya City, 35.5 degrees in Gifu City and 35.2 degrees in the city of Kyoto.

The temperatures are expected to rise further, with highs reaching a dangerous 38 degrees in the cities of Okayama, Kyoto and Gifu. The mercury is also expected to soar to 37 degrees in Osaka City and 36 degrees in Hiroshima City.

The agency says daytime high temperatures of 35 degrees or higher will continue through Monday in northern Japan, through around Tuesday in eastern Japan and through around Thursday in western Japan.

Weather officials are urging people to take extra care to avoid heatstroke.

They are advising people to avoid nonessential outings, use air conditioners properly and frequently drink water even if they do not feel thirsty.
