US report warns of China's 'information manipulation' NHK

The United States warns that China is attempting to reshape the global information environment through manipulation to promote its propaganda.

The US State Department released its first report on China's information strategy on Thursday.

It says Beijing spends billions of dollars annually on foreign information manipulation efforts to reshape the global information environment to its advantage.

The report also says China is trying to limit Taiwan's role in international organizations. A UN body is said to have changed references to Taiwan to "Taiwan, Province of China" during the period when a Chinese person headed the organization.

The report says China has invested in cable TV service providers in Africa through Chinese state-owned companies to influence the content viewers can access. It says Western news channels have been excluded from basic packages for subscribers.

The report says China and Russia have ratcheted up cooperation in the information space concerning Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It says Beijing is amplifying Moscow's "false claims" that NATO is to blame for jeopardizing peace in Europe.

Special Envoy and Coordinator at the US State Department James Rubin compiled the report. He told reporters that China's efforts to transform the global information landscape are damaging the security and stability of the US and its partners.
