Cherry blossoms in full bloom in Tokyo NHK

The Japan Meteorological Agency says cherry blossoms in Tokyo are in full bloom.

The announcement on Wednesday came nine days sooner than usual and five days earlier than last year.

Temperatures rose to the levels of May in many parts of the country on Wednesday. The figure in central Tokyo reached 23.8 degrees Celsius.

Blooming of cherry trees was reported by local meteorological offices including those in Kumamoto City, southwestern Japan; Tsu City in central Japan; and Toyama City on the Sea of Japan side.

Meanwhile, rain is forecast for wide areas of western and eastern Japan on Thursday due to a low-pressure system and a rain front. Weather officials say atmospheric conditions will become unstable mainly on the Pacific side of western Japan. They warn of possible heavy rain, lightning and strong gusts in the area.
