A displaced resident of Gaza has told NHK that his family is facing serious shortages of food and water in the enclave. The man, who spoke to NHK on Monday, fled to Gaza City from Jabalia in northern Gaza amid fierce Israeli attacks. He said there is no food or water for his children, and that Israel is telling residents to evacuate to safe areas despite there being no safe place to flee. On the same day, Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera reported that three people were killed in an Israeli attack on Nuseirat in central Gaza. Local health authorities say more than 43,600 people have been killed since the fighting between Israel and Hamas began in October last year. The UN relief agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, wrote Monday on social media that, "two million people are in need of humanitarian assistance." It added that, "despite the different pleas from the United Nations and other humanitarian agencies, there is no improvement." The United States wrote a letter to Israel last month, demanding it act to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza. The letter indicated that unless Israel takes steps within 30 days, the US may suspend its military assistance. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan on Sunday said the administration of President Joe Biden will make judgements this week about what kind of progress Israel has made.
