US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has congratulated Lai Ching-te on his victory in Taiwan's presidential election.
Blinken issued a statement on Saturday. It said, "We also congratulate the Taiwan people for once again demonstrating the strength of their robust democratic system and electoral process."
The secretary of state noted that the US is "committed to maintaining cross-Strait peace and stability, and the peaceful resolution of differences, free from coercion and pressure."
Blinken also said that the partnership between the American people and the people of Taiwan continues to broaden across economic, cultural, and people-to-people ties.
President Joe Biden was asked about the results of Taiwan's presidential election. He said the United States is "not supporting" the independence of Taiwan.
