US Navy destroyer transits Taiwan Strait NHK

The US Navy's 7th Fleet says its guided-missile destroyer USS John Finn sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday.

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense said the destroyer sailed from the north of the strait to the south.

The statement by the Commander of the 7th Fleet Public Affairs reads: "John Finn's transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the United States' commitment to upholding freedom of navigation for all nations as a principle."

It also says, "No member of the international community should be intimidated or coerced into giving up their rights and freedoms."

Responding to the move, a spokesperson for the Chinese military's Eastern Theater Command of China's People's Liberation Army issued a statement through its official account on a social media platform.

It reads, "Recently, the US military has frequently carried out provocative actions, maliciously undermining regional peace and stability."
