Japan officials call for caution as snowstorm worsens NHK

People living along the Sea of Japan coast are bracing for more heavy snow this weekend.

The record-breaking snowstorm has already been linked to at least 9 deaths -- and officials are warning residents to stay indoors to avoid being stranded, or worse.

The winter storm intensified on Friday -- with communities across much of Central and Northern Japan taking another heavy dusting of snow. The unusual weather has snarled traffic, stopped trains and prompted airlines to cancel flights. Officials are warning drivers to be careful on the roads.

It comes as many are busy preparing for the New Year holiday. With deliveries slowed, this maker of traditional mochi rice cakes is seeing stock pile up.
A worker at Marushin Shokuhin said, "I truly hope the snow will let up so that we can make our deliveries."

The snow has knocked out power to thousands of households, especially in Hokkaido. Officials say residents should be careful of dangerous road conditions and avoid any unnecessary outings.
