A Japanese government survey shows that about 330,000 babies were born in the country from January to June. This indicates that the annual total may fall below 700,000 for the first time since record-keeping began. The health ministry released the demographic data on Tuesday. The approximate number of births, excluding foreign nationals, for the first half of this year was 329,998. This represents a decrease of 22,242, or 6.3 percent, from the same period last year. Compared with the figure in 2014, the number dropped by 30.7 percent. The data also shows that 727,288 babies were born in 2023. This is the lowest number since record-keeping began in 1899. At the current rate, the number of childbirths could dip below 700,000 this year. The number of marriages for the first half of this year was 240,593, up 1,967 from the same period last year.
