People are urged to take steps to prevent heatstroke as extremely hot weather continues to grip much of Japan on Saturday.
The Japan Meteorological Agency says a high-pressure system is bringing clear skies and driving up temperatures in wide regions, from Tohoku in the northeast to Kyushu in the southwest.
As of 11 a.m., the mercury had risen to 35.7 degrees in Kiryu City in Gunma Prefecture, 35.5 degrees in Maebashi City in Gunma Prefecture and Kamogawa City in Chiba Prefecture, and 35.4 degrees in Hatoyama Town in Saitama Prefecture.
Daytime highs of 38 degrees are forecast for the cities of Kofu, Maebashi and Fukushima, and Kumagaya City in Saitama Prefecture.
The mercury is forecast to reach 37 degrees in locations including the cities of Yokohama, Saitama, Utsunomiya, Fukui and Yamagata, and 36 degrees in central Tokyo and the cities of Osaka, Kyoto, Toyama and Tottori.
Heatstroke alerts have been issued for 31 of the country's 47 prefectures, from Tohoku to Kyushu.
