Malaysia's new Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim convened parliament on Monday for the first time since November's general election. His motion of confidence passed, as coalition partners backed his leadership. Leaders of five political coalitions and parties have agreed on a memorandum to support Anwar's administration. This gave him the backing of 148 lawmakers, or a two-thirds majority of 222 seats. Such motions are not mandatory. Anwar sought one to strengthen his grip on power, as his coalition government consists of various parties with different stances. But his government already faces challenges. Anwar tapped Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, leader of rival alliance Barisan Nasional, as co-deputy prime minister. He is on trial for charges including graft and money laundering. Anwar has pledged to revive the country's economy, but observers say carrying out major reforms could hurt his coalition partners' vested interests. That could set off another wave of political instability. A real test of Anwar's leadership will come early next year, when he submits a new federal budget.
