Iran's president is signaling possible retaliation against the United States as the world awaits what steps the Islamic Republic will take in the wake of the US bombings of three of its nuclear sites.



The US military hit Natanz, Isfahan and Fordow in central Iran on Sunday. Fordow is believed to have an underground uranium enrichment facility.



Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warned of retaliation later in the day, saying the US "must receive a response to their aggression."



A senior Iranian military official said in a statement that the US has openly and directly violated the sovereignty of Iran and entered into war.



The official said Washington must know it has given Iran's armed forces a free hand to take any necessary action against US interests and military forces.



Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi did not rule out closing the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime transport route, saying a variety of options are available to Iran.



Washington warns that any Iranian attacks on US bases and other facilities will be met with further strikes by the US military.



The Israeli military announced on Monday that it attacked six airports in Iran and destroyed 15 fighter jets and helicopters. It also said its air force struck military infrastructure sites in Kermanshah in western Iran.



Iran has also been carrying out attacks intermittently on Israel. It launched missiles on Monday morning, and sirens blared across Tel Aviv, Israel's largest commercial city, and Jerusalem.



The exchange of attacks between Israel and Iran is further escalating tensions in the Middle East.
