Japan's Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru has expressed readiness to confirm a bilateral commitment to developing artificial intelligence with US President Donald Trump when the two meet for a summit later this week. Ishiba made the comment during his talks with Japan's SoftBank Group Chairman and CEO Son Masayoshi and US-based OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at the Prime Minister's Office in Tokyo on Monday. Ishiba is to fly to Washington for his first summit in person with Trump on Friday. Son and Altman jointly met reporters with Trump recently at the White House, where they announced their plan to make massive investments to build AI infrastructure in the United States. Son told Ishiba that Trump is strongly determined to see that the United States becomes the center of AI technology. He added that he wants to deliver a prime example of state-of-the-art AI to the world from Japan. Altman explained that AI agent systems "can do tasks that have required people many days of work, and it will significantly increase the economic output of the world." Ishiba said that his administration wants to fundamentally change the foundations of Japan, and he believes AI technology will play a significant role. He added that he wants to see Japan and the US deepen their cooperation in this field so the world becomes more peaceful, prosperous and safe.
