Record-level snowfalls have hit southern Tohoku and Niigata Prefecture facing the Sea of Japan. Although the worst may be over, weather officials are warning people to watch out for traffic disruptions and be careful when removing rooftop snow.
                
The Japan Meteorological Agency says a winter-type pressure pattern and an influx of strong cold air brought heavy snow on Sunday and Monday, mainly to Hokuriku, Niigata Prefecture and Tohoku.
                
As of 11 a.m. on Tuesday, snow reached 2.24 meters deep in the village of Ohkura in Yamagata Prefecture; 1.87 meters in Uonuma City in Niigata Prefecture; and 1.82 meters in Sukayu in the Hakkoda mountain range in Aomori Prefecture.
                
Snowfalls in some areas have reached three times the seasonal average. Forecasters say more is on the way, mainly in areas facing the Sea of Japan, although the peak is over.
                
Vehicles have been stranded on icy roads in Niigata Prefecture. Weather officials say snow and ice could further disrupt transportation. They&#039;re also warning of possible power outages and avalanches.
                
The winter-type pressure system is expected to intensify again from Thursday. An inflow of cold air could cause strong winds, blizzards or alert-level snowfalls. Forecasters are asking people to follow the latest weather information.
