Western Japan is seeing torrential rainfall. Some rivers have overflowed their banks as downpours continued over the weekend. Officials say at least one person has been killed and several are unaccounted for. One of the hardest-hit prefectures is Kumamoto, where officials say two rivers exceeded flood-risk levels on Monday morning. Local authorities have issued evacuation orders for Kumamoto and some other prefectures in the Kyushu region. A bridge collapsed as water rushed downstream. Areas nearby are said to be flooded and the water is reaching houses. Elsewhere in Kumamoto, the main hall of this temple collapsed. Landslides and flooding toppled trees and utility poles in the neighborhood. More than 600 millimeters of rain has been recorded in parts of the region for the past four days. That already exceeds the monthly amount for the whole of July. Still more rain is expected as the front is set to remain over the southern part of Kyushu.Up to 300 millimeters of rain is forecast for the 24 hours through Tuesday. Besides the risk of flooding and landslides, weather officials are calling for people to be on the alert for lightning strikes and high winds.
