United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has vowed to cut costs within his organization amid pressure from US President Donald Trump. The UN chief said on Wednesday, "We must ensure value for money while advancing shared values." He was speaking at a news conference held to mark the 80th anniversary of the UN's founding. Guterres said the UN has faced a liquidity crisis for at least the past seven years. He added that not all member states pay their contributions in full or on time. The United States is the largest contributor to the UN. But as part of his "America First" policy, Trump is taking a tough stance against the UN and drastically cutting foreign aid. The Trump administration has already announced that it will terminate about 80 percent of all the programs at the United States Agency for International Development, or USAID. UN senior officials have expressed concerns about the situation, saying that Trump's return to office added urgency and ambition to the efficiency effort.
