The leaders of the 21 members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum began a summit meeting on Thursday in San Francisco. The issues of climate change, trade and investment are high on the agenda.
Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio plans to point out the impact of Russia's invasion on the global economy and to call for cooperation to improve the situation.
At a ministerial meeting before the summit, Russia and China strongly opposed the idea of including phrases condemning Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in a ministerial statement. Negotiations are underway to compile the document.
A leaders' meeting of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity, or IPEF, is also scheduled to take place.
In ministerial talks that preceded the meeting, the 14 IPEF member states, including Japan and the United States, reached a broad agreement on the "clean economy" concept, aimed at promoting investments toward decarbonization. They also reached a consensus on the topic of "fair economy," which includes anti-corruption measures.
The participants are expected to confirm financial assistance for emerging economies to help them achieve carbon neutrality.
