The operator of the Line messaging app is reporting a massive breach of personal data. Line Yahoo, or LY Corporation, believes that about 440,000 items may have been leaked, apparently due to a cyberattack on an affiliate's computer system. The company says a subcontractor of its South Korean affiliate Naver was targeted. The damage apparently spread to LY, as the two firms share parts of their computer systems. Naver is a major shareholder in LY. LY says the leaked or potentially leaked data include users' age groups and genders, although that information does not identify the individuals. The company also lists the purchase history of Line stickers, as well as the names, positions and email addresses of user companies. LY says so far it has not confirmed the leakage of users' messaging content, bank accounts or credit-card information. The company says no damage had been reported as of Monday. But it will contact users who may experience secondary damage on a case-by-case basis. LY says it and Naver will separate the authentication system where the unauthorized access was confirmed and boost the system's management.
