Report: OpenAI probes alleged DeepSeek illicit data acquisition NHK

US media report that OpenAI is looking into allegations that individuals linked to Chinese startup DeepSeek improperly obtained data using the American firm's technology.

DeepSeek released a low-cost generative AI model this month. It claims its performance is on par with a recent ChatGPT model.

Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday that OpenAI has launched a joint probe with Microsoft.

The media outlet says the IT giant found that individuals they believe to be linked with DeepSeek extracted a large amount of data using OpenAI's application programming interface.

Meanwhile White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the National Security Council is looking into the implications of DeepSeek's model.

OpenAI responded to the report by saying it's working closely with the government to guard against efforts to take US technology.
