People remember victims of downed Malaysian jet NHK

A Malaysian passenger jet was shot down above eastern Ukraine 10 years ago. People across the world have been remembering the 298 passengers and crew who died.

Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 was heading from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on July 17, 2014.

The plane came crashing down in Donetsk amid fighting between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists.

A Dutch court said in 2022 the attackers used a missile system brought from Russia. Moscow denies involvement.

Thirty-eight victims came from Australia. Bereaved family members and investigators were among those at a ceremony on Wednesday in parliament.

In a speech, Foreign Minister Penny Wong said, "Today, on behalf of the Australian government, I recommit again to our collective pursuit of truth, justice and accountability for the outrages perpetuated on the 17th of July 2014."

Representatives from Malaysia, Australia, Ukraine and elsewhere also gathered at a ceremony in the Netherlands.
