Weather officials in Japan are warning people to be on alert ahead of the arrival of Severe Tropical Storm Khanun. The storm is expected to approach the country's southwestern region of Kyushu on Wednesday. Officials at the Japan Meteorological Agency say Khanun is moving slowly north-northwest over waters off Yakushima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture. They say the maximum wind speed near the storm's center is more than 100 kilometers per hour. Bands of active rain clouds are expected to develop in the Amami region and in southern and northern Kyushu through Wednesday night. Record-breaking precipitation could hit the Pacific side of western and eastern Japan through Friday. Violent winds and high waves are expected. Weather officials are calling on people to be on high alert for landslides, flooding in low-lying areas and overflowing rivers. People are being advised to make early preparations, including checking hazard maps. Meanwhile, the weather office says another tropical storm has developed to the south of the country's main island of Honshu. Officials say Lan is almost stationary in waters near the island of Minamitorishima.
