The tensions between India and Canada show no signs of easing. The trouble was triggered by Ottawa's claim that the New Delhi government was involved in the killing of a Sikh leader in Canada. The rift between the countries was the top story in prominent Indian newspapers on Wednesday. One headline read: "Trudeau triggers diplomatic firestorm with India remark." Another read: "India denies any role in Nijjar's killing in Canada." Hardeep Singh Nijjar was a Canadian citizen. He was shot dead in Canada in June. Ottawa is calling on New Delhi to cooperate and clarify the matter. But India has denied the allegations. Nijjar was reportedly a supporter of the Sikh independence movement in India. New Delhi designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke about the issue with reporters on Tuesday. Trudeau said that he asked India to take the issue as seriously as Canada is taking it. He said, "We are not looking to provoke or escalate. We are simply laying out the facts, as we understand them; and we want to work with the government of India to lay everything clear." Both governments are now keeping a close eye on the situation. They are waiting to see what the other side's next move will be.
