Russia's Kinzhal missiles likely miss intended targets: UK defense ministry NHK

Britain's defense ministry says it is highly likely Russia carried out last week the first use of a Kinzhal missile against Ukraine since August. It also highlighted the weapon's poor accuracy so far.

The British ministry released its analysis on Tuesday about Ukraine's claim that its Air Force intercepted one of three Kinzhal missiles near the capital Kyiv last Thursday.

The Kinzhal missile is one of the six new "super weapons" Russia's President Vladimir Putin announced in 2018. Russia says it is hypersonic and has a maximum speed of Mach 10.

The British ministry says Russia has reserved Kinzhal missiles for what it perceives as high value targets. The ministry added that many Kinzhal launches have likely missed their intended targets, while Ukraine has also succeeded in intercepting them.

Ukraine's Air Force said on Wednesday that the country's air defense systems destroyed 18 out of 19 attack drones launched by Russia. The attacks targeted Kyiv, the southern region of Odesa and other regions.

Authorities say nine people, including four children, were injured in the attack in the southern city of Kherson.
