Some businesses in Japan are stressing sustainability as they promote the winter holiday season. A new-year display on the island of Enoshima, about 50 kilometers from Tokyo, has run for more than 20 years. This year marks a change. The site has been reconfigured to use fewer light bulbs. They are spaced a meter apart, whereas there used to be 10 per meter. The organizer also says power consumption in the entrance area has been reduced by 95 percent. It says today's public expects that businesses will practice sustainability. The organizer says even if the event were to be expanded, it would feel obligated to reduce its energy footprint. In central Tokyo, a Christmas tree is made from the same material in plastic drink bottles. The tree will be crushed into small pieces after the lights are switched off at the end of the season. Then, the material will be recycled to be used to make bottles and clothing.
