Relatives of a Sri Lankan woman who died at an immigration facility in Japan have called for people to learn more about how she was treated while in detention.

Two younger sisters of Wishma Sandamali held a news conference after some video footage of her detention was shown in court for the first time on Wednesday.

Wishma died in March 2021 at the facility in Nagoya, central Japan, where she was being held for overstaying her visa. The 33-year-old had repeatedly complained of ill health while in detention.

One of the sisters, Poornima, said she thinks people who saw the video understood how cruel the situation was for Wishma. She said she wants more people to watch and learn about her mistreatment.

She noted that the government should have been able to show the video much earlier. She said the five hours of footage is not enough to get the whole picture of the incident, and called for the disclosure of the entire video.

The other sister, Wayomi, said people, including those in Japan's medical system, should watch the video of Wishma to learn about how Japanese immigration authorities treat detainees to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.
