UNESCO has decided to add Thailand&#039;s traditional New Year festival Songkran to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list. People across the country celebrate the holiday with water-filled activities.
                
UNESCO&#039;s Intergovernmental Committee made the decision on Wednesday.
                
During Songkran, Thais purify Buddhist statues, stupas, and the hands of seniors with water to wish for their good fortune.
                
The festival takes place in mid-April, when the country sees its highest temperatures.
                
Songkran is also known as the &quot;water festival,&quot; where people enjoy soaking each other with water cannons. It has become a tourist attraction for foreign visitors.
                
People are hoping UNESCO&#039;s recognition will lead to reviving the country&#039;s economy.
                
One man in Bangkok said, &quot;I hope it will attract more foreigners to come and improve the economy.&quot;
                
The Thai government says that it is ready to warmly welcome visitors from all around the world to experience Songkran.
