Mexico's government has released surveillance video of police forcing their way into its embassy in the Ecuadorian capital of Quito last week. Ecuadorian police stormed the Mexican embassy on Friday and took custody of former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas, who was convicted of corruption. Glas had taken refuge at the embassy seeking political asylum. The video shows armed security personnel breaking into the embassy, pushing a Mexican diplomat away from a door, and carrying out an individual believed to be Glas by his arms and legs. Mexico has cut diplomatic ties with Ecuador, and is stepping up condemnation. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador says his country cannot remain silent in the face of a severity like the one suffered by its diplomatic representation in Ecuador. Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa says he made exceptional decisions to protect national security, the rule of law, and the dignity of a people who reject any form of impunity for criminals. The embassy incursion is also drawing criticism from the international community. Nicaragua has announced it will sever diplomatic ties with Ecuador. The United Nations, the United States and countries in Central and South America have condemned the raid.
