South Korea and the United States have announced additional sanctions on North Korea in response to its provocative actions, including the test-firing of a new intercontinental-class ballistic missile last month.
The South Korean government said on Friday that it will impose independent sanctions on eight individuals and seven institutions.
It said the individuals are involved in financial transactions related to the North's nuclear and missile development. The seven institutions are said to have played roles in Pyongyang's efforts to evade UN Security Council sanctions.
This is the second round of sanctions announced by the administration of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol. It says the North's missile launches pose a serious threat to the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and the international community.
The US sanctions, announced on Thursday, target three senior officials of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party. The Treasury Department says the officials have provided support to the North's development of weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles.
