Cyberattack on Japan Airlines causing some delays NHK

Japan Airlines says it has come under a cyberattack that is causing delays for some of its domestic and international flights.

The airline says it experienced a sudden surge in traffic on its network equipment used for data communication with external systems from around 7:24 a.m. on Thursday.

JAL says this has led to glitches in its systems, including one for managing passenger baggage.

JAL says that as of noon on Thursday, 24 domestic flights suffered delays of 30 to 85 minutes and some international flights also experienced delays.

JAL says it has suspended sales of tickets for flights on Thursday and its app has also been impacted.

JAL says no flights have so far been cancelled.

Japan Airlines says it has shut down the affected equipment to investigate what happened and is working to restore its systems, but cannot say when that will be.

JAL says the problem does not affect the operational safety of its flights.

It also says it deeply apologizes for the inconvenience the issue has caused customers and others.
