Harvard University has announced that it has rejected conditions set by the administration of President Donald Trump for it to continue receiving federal funding.
        
                    
                  
Harvard President Alan Garber said in a statement on Monday that the government required audits of the viewpoints of its student body and faculty.
        
                    
                  
Garber disclosed a government letter informing Harvard to immediately reform and enforce its student discipline policies and to end all diversity, equity and inclusion programs.
        
                    
                  
Garber said, &quot;The administration&#039;s prescription goes beyond the power of the federal government&quot; and threatens Harvard&#039;s values as a private institution.
He said no government should dictate what private universities can teach or whom they can admit and hire.
        
                    
                  
The Washington Post has reported that Harvard is the first school &quot;to formally push back against the government&#039;s efforts to force change at elite universities.&quot;
        
                    
                  
Last month, the Trump administration announced that it was reviewing roughly 9 billion dollars in grants and other funds. The move came after some Jewish students were harassed during demonstrations last year.
        
                    
                  
Columbia University, which had been denied federal funds, indicated that it would agree to the government conditions to have the financing restored.
