A: Hey there! Did you catch the news lately? B: Nah, what's up? A: Well, Ukraine's President, Zelenskyy, decided to pull Ukraine out of an agreement that forbids making or using landmines. B: Wait, really? And why would they do that? A: Yeah! It's because Russia has been using landmines in their warfare and it seems unfair to keep Ukraine from defending itself. B: Oh, I see. That doesn't sound very fair at all. A: Exactly! And get this, other countries near Russia, like Poland, Baltic nations, and Finland, have also said they might leave the same agreement. B: Wow, that sounds like a big change! But what about Ukraine's offensive in Donetsk? Has anything happened there? A: Yeah, Russia has continued their attacks on the frontline in Donetsk. In fact, they captured a settlement near one of Ukraine's logistics hubs recently. B: That doesn't sound good at all... I hope things calm down soon. A: Me too, buddy! Let's keep an eye on this situation and hope for the best. ---------------- Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a decree to withdraw the country from a treaty banning anti-personnel landmines. The president on Sunday took the move to pull Ukraine from the Ottawa Convention which prohibits the production and use of anti-personnel mines. Russia is not a party to the convention. Ukraine's foreign ministry said in a statement that Russia has "extensively used anti-personnel mines as a method of warfare." The ministry also said that as a result, "Ukraine has found itself in an unequal and unjust situation that restricts its right to self-defense." Media reports say Ukraine is expected to notify the United Nations of its withdrawal from the treaty after it secures parliamentary approval. Other countries bordering Russia, including Poland, three Baltic nations and Finland, indicated earlier this year that they would withdraw from the convention. The Russian military has continued its offensive on the frontline in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk. Russia's defense ministry said on Sunday that Russian troops captured a settlement near a logistics hub of Ukraine. Ukraine's top military commander Oleksandr Syrskyi said on Friday that Russia had amassed more than 110,000 troops on the frontline of Donetsk.
