A court in Moscow has fined a Russian human rights activist for harming trust in the Russian military. Oleg Orlov is a senior member of the Russian human rights organization, Memorial, which is a co-winner of the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize. The court on Wednesday ordered him to pay a fine of 150,000 rubles, or about 1,500 dollars. Memorial won the Nobel Prize last year for monitoring human rights violations since the Soviet era. Orlov criticized Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In March, authorities searched his home and other locations, saying he posted an article discrediting the military on social media. He was later indicted. After the verdict, Orlov told reporters that the ruling is unjust, and that he will appeal it. He also said he must fight for those in prison after protesting against the war. In December 2021, the Supreme Court ordered the rights group to disband.
