Japan's Defense Ministry is asking for a record 7.74 trillion yen, or about 53 billion dollars, in the next fiscal year's budget. The ministry decided on this record amount on Thursday, the deadline for government ministries and agencies to file their budget requests. Fiscal 2024 is the second year of the government's five-year plan to drastically strengthen Japan's defense capabilities. Within the total amount requested, the ministry is earmarking nearly 380 billion yen, or 2.6 billion dollars, to build two destroyers equipped with the Aegis missile interceptor system. The ships are a replacement of the planned land-based Aegis Ashore missile defense system, which has been abandoned due to technical reasons. The ministry aims to deploy the first of the two new vessels in fiscal 2027. The ministry is also requesting funds to develop a new type of missile capable of intercepting hypersonic missiles at an early stage. Japan and the United States agreed on a joint development in a recent summit. Also on the list of budget requests are costs for setting up a Self-Defense Force logistics unit dedicated to quickly transporting goods and personnel to Japan's southwestern islands in the event of an emergency, and funds to procure small ships with high mobility for that purpose.
