Japan promotes its biodiversity frameworks at COP15 NHK

Japan's delegation to the UN COP15 biodiversity conference has promoted the country's track record on the subject since the COP10 talks in 2010.

At the ongoing COP meeting in Montreal, Canada, Japan hosted a seminar on Friday to showcase its biodiversity frameworks.

The talk covered the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, adopted 12 years ago as part of COP10 in the central Japanese city of Nagoya. The conference marked a significant turning point in global efforts to protect biodiversity.

Environment Minister Nishimura Akihiro said Japan has helped developing countries achieve the Aichi targets, referring to a fund the country created to promote the protection of biodiversity in those countries. Officials said developing nations are still using the fund.

Also, Japan and China jointly hosted a breakfast meeting at the COP15 venue. Participants confirmed that they will continue to use the Nagoya Protocol, also adopted at the COP10 meeting. The protocol outlines how developing and developed countries share economic benefits from the use of genetic information from the world's plants and animals.

One of the participants, the Philippines' environment minister, said her country is willing to work with Japan to realize a fair and equitable distribution of the benefits, based on the Nagoya Protocol.
