Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is maintaining his stance that Israel will keep fighting in Gaza until it dismantles Hamas. Meanwhile, calls have been growing for a ceasefire deal to secure the release of hostages held by the Islamic group.

Protesters have been gathering across Israel, putting pressure on the administration following the recovery of the bodies of six hostages in Gaza.

Hamas has been demanding the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza for any agreement on hostages to be made. But Netanyahu said on Monday that Israel must maintain control of the Philadelphi Corridor on the southern edge of Gaza bordering Egypt. He says the area is a key pipeline for Hamas to rearm.

Meanwhile, Hamas said the same day that if Netanyahu insists on liberating the hostages through military pressure instead of negotiating a pact, the captives would be returned to their families inside coffins.

Hamas also said that members guarding the prisoners have been instructed on how to deal with the captives should the Israeli forces approach where they are being detained.

US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed on the situation by US negotiators who have been working on a ceasefire and hostage-release. Before the meeting on Monday, Biden indicated to reporters that he did not think Netanyahu was doing enough to secure an accord.

Biden also said the US was "very close" to presenting a final proposal on an agreement.
