One pedestrian was killed and 10 others were injured during a police pursuit of a stolen car in Tokyo's Adachi Ward on Monday.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department arrested a 37-year-old man on suspicion of stealing the vehicle from a dealership and causing the deadly accident.
A man in his 80s was killed and 10 others were injured after the car plowed into pedestrians in the Umejima district of Adachi Ward at around 12:30 p.m. One of the injured, a woman in her 20s, is unconscious and in critical condition.
About two hours prior to the incident, police received a call saying someone had stolen a car with no license plate that was on display from a dealership.
Police later saw the stolen car near the dealership and began pursuing it. The police said the accident happened during the chase.
The driver left the car and fled on foot. Police later arrested the 37-year-old man who lives in Adachi Ward on suspicion of theft.
Police are questioning the suspect in connection with the theft and the hit-and-run incident.
The man, however, has denied the theft allegation, telling investigators that he didn't steal the vehicle but tried to test-drive it.
The suspect's name has been withheld as police determine whether he can be held criminally responsible.
Police say they have found no problems in the way officers carried out the pursuit.
