Senior officials from the US, Greenland and Denmark met in Washington on Wednesday. This comes after US President Donald Trump has repeatedly called for his country to take control of Greenland, which is an autonomous Danish territory.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen attended the meeting with his counterpart from Greenland, Vivian Motzfeldt. They spoke with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Trump has said he wants control over Greenland because it is critical for US security. However, Denmark has rejected the idea.
Rasmussen described the talks as &quot;constructive,&quot; but he said differences remain. He added that they will &quot;form a high-level working group&quot; to reach a common understanding.
The Danish Ministry of Defence said it is stepping up military exercises in Greenland, and the German Defense Ministry said it will send personnel.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said in an interview with local media that his country will soon open a consulate in Greenland. He described the move as sending a &quot;political signal,&quot; and he emphasized that &quot;Greenland does not want to be owned, governed or integrated&quot; into the US.
Canada has also announced plans to open a consulate in Greenland in the near future.
