Vote counting is underway in Cambodia's national elections. Prime Minister Hun Sen's Cambodian People's Party is almost certain to win with the strongest opposition party excluded from the ballot. The polls closed at 3 p.m. local time for the first general election in 5 years. Over 9 million registered voters chose among 18 political parties. Hun Sen's oldest son, Hun Manet, is standing for the first time as a national assembly candidate. The prime minister has hinted at a succession of power in the near future. Some voters expressed satisfaction with the country's rapid economic development. One voter said he will continue to support the current administration as he is satisfied with his peaceful life. But critics have called the election unfair and undemocratic. In May, electoral authorities disqualified the main opposition Candlelight Party. They claimed the party's paperwork was incomplete. The US and United Nations have voiced concern about the election and legitimacy of the country's democratic process. Attention is focused on whether heavy-handed authoritarian rule in Cambodia will be extended.
