Belarus's Central Election Commission has announced that President Alexander Lukashenko won his seventh term with nearly 87 percent of the vote in Sunday's presidential election.

The commission on Monday released the results of the election. It said Lukashenko garnered over 5.13 million votes, or 86.8 percent of the vote. Five candidates including Lukashenko were running.

Lukashenko, known as an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, is often dubbed "Europe's last dictator."

In the previous presidential election in 2020, citizens insisting that the vote was flawed held massive rallies. Many people were forced to leave Belarus, including pro-democracy opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. This time, protesters in Belarus were largely silent.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said in a statement released on Sunday, "Today's sham election in Belarus has been neither free, nor fair."

Meanwhile, people took to the streets of the Polish capital Warsaw on Sunday to protest against the Belarus election.

Sunday's march was headed by exiled Tsikhanouskaya.

Footage taken by local media shows Tsikhanouskaya walking with her husband's photo, and the marchers holding traditional flags banned for use in Belarus by Lukashenko.

Tsikhanouskaya told Polish media that Lukashenko maintains his status through force, violence and the support of Russian President Putin.

She noted that his re-election ridicules voting rights, international law and the Belarusian people, as well as spurring negative sentiments.

She appealed for support by the international community, saying their struggle will not be victorious without their support.

She added the determination of the Belarusians needs to be sustained by democratic partners.
