The US military says a Russian fighter jet fired flares in front of a US drone over Syria, striking the US aircraft and damaging it.
                
The US Air Force revealed the incident in a statement released on Tuesday.
                
The statement says Russian fighter aircraft flew dangerously close to a US drone on a mission against Islamic State militants on Sunday.
                
It says the Russian jet deployed flares from a position directly overhead, with only a few meters of separation between the aircraft, and one of them struck the drone. But the US aircraft was able to return to base.
                
A photo released by the US Defense Department shows a damaged propeller of the drone.
                
In its statement, the US military called on Russian forces in Syria to put an immediate end to their &quot;reckless, unprovoked, and unprofessional behavior.&quot;
                
Earlier this month, the US military said Russian fighter jets were harassing US drones over Syria, by dropping parachute flares in front of them and maneuvering dangerously.
