The Sasakawa Peace Foundation and other Japanese organizations plan to provide educational support to the children of migrant workers in Thailand. They signed a memorandum of understanding with the Thai government on Friday in Bangkok. Thailand accepts migrant workers from Myanmar, Cambodia and other neighboring countries, but many cannot afford to send their children to school. Four pilot areas mainly in Bangkok have been chosen for the education initiative, which will run for four years. The aim is to teach migrant elementary school students to read and write the Thai language. The initiative includes training for teachers and volunteers. Sasakawa Peace Foundation official Iwashina Masako says the children will have more job opportunities in the future.
