UN aid convoys are entering northwestern Syria from Turkey to deliver relief supplies to earthquake victims. As relief efforts gain traction, President Bashar al-Assad has agreed to open two additional border crossings for three months. Kirsten Mildren, the spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, expressed hope that the UN will expand as much as possible its delivery of aid through the three crossings. On Saturday, more than a dozen trucks loaded with supplies such as medicines, blankets and tents, left the UN aid hub in the southern Turkish province of Hatay. UN officials say nearly 200 trucks have so far transported humanitarian aid for 5 million Syrians in the northwest of the country since the devastating earthquakes struck on February 6. The UN is now considering providing cash handouts to help those who have lost their homes in the disaster.
