Rice prices at supermarkets across Japan continue to climb. The retail price nudged up for the 16th straight week, even though national stockpiles started hitting the market back in late March. The agriculture ministry says the average price for a 5-kilogram bag of rice was 4,220 yen, or about 29 dollars, for the week through April 20. That's based on a weekly survey of about 1,000 supermarkets nationwide. The price rose 3 yen, or about 2 cents, from the previous week, and doubled from a year ago when it was slightly over 2,000 yen. Last week, the government carried out the third auction of national stockpiles, and plans to release the stockpiles every month until the summer.
